We,ve got it segregated down to sports in every category.
The General could be split into "general Sports" and another page maybe "General Stuff".

The new category could include diet advice ,recipes, politics, stock picks, business ideas, etc. This could serve to keep the sports with the sports, and the other stuff could be read at one's leisure.

I like to read it all, but you lose the new designation if you skip through the general forum, and return later, then you're not sure what you've read. Volume of posts seems to be growing, you may read the general forum,and next time you look there's 50 new ones. Also threads get buried quickly. This just proves the site is gaining popularity.
