Are Some Days Better than Others?

Gary,
You briefly mentioned in your summation of yesterday's results that the pools were smaller, which you felt contributed to lower payouts.
About ten years ago I went to my local (Bay Meadows) track every day for a month or. After three or four days I began to recognize the regulars, and I also noticed that they tended to be the sharper handicappers (no betting on names or colors or does the horse take a dump for these guys). On the weekends, and to a certain extent on Friday, there were a number of people there who weren't regulars, people just out for a good time.
All this is a long way of saying that I suspect not only are the pools smaller on Wednesday, but they were also being bet by your best handicappers, those who are trying to make a living doing it.
On the weekends, the pools aren't nearly as sharp since the bettors aren't nearly as sharp.
Or at least, that is my suspicion. However, I have no concrete evidence to substantiate that.
Has anyone ever done a study to prove that the payouts are larger on weekends? That would suggest that the money being entered in the pools was not as skillful. Or maybe someone has some other ideas of how to substantiate (or disprove) my suspicion.
It seems to me if this is true, if the pools are less accurate on the weekends, a handicapper would be wise to increase the size of his or her bets on the weekends, since you are not competing against as skillful a group of bettors.
Any thoughts?
