When to Bet

Gary, and all,

Gary, I followed your picks yesterday online, using the Philadelphia Park tote board. I have an account with them. One of the things that struck me right away was that several times the odds were *very* close to, if not right on, what you indicated was the lowest odds you would bet into.

When do you place your bets? Do you wait till the very last instant? Or do you make your decision whether to bet at 5 minutes before post time, two minutes?

How about the rest of you who use the toteboard to determine if you are going to place a bet?

It seems to me that it is almost becoming a guessing game with so much money flowing into the pari-mutuel pools from off track betting sites and not showing up on the toteboard until the horses are off.

Of course in some cases it is obvious. Say, you maintain that 3-1 is the lowest odds you will take for a particular horse and it is showing up at 6/5. It is unlikely to climb to 3-1, so you don't bet. But in many cases, it isn't so obvious. You might say you will take 5/2 odds and that is what the toteboard is saying, so you bet. You glance up at the toteboard after the race has begun and all of a sudden your horse is at 2-1. You wouldn't have bet if you had known that. Or do all of you regard that as simply one of the bumps in the road of horse racing?
