In Response To: Derby Trial (Don Peszynski)

When Secretariat won the TC, Frank Martin, trainer of his main competitor, Sham, fried his horse. 5 route races vs top competition in 8 weeks. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, but his trainer was so focused on beating Secretariat, it hurt. Sham is the horse you see in the beginning of the Belmont with Secretariat, the one that kept getting farther and farther behind until the rest of the pack passed him as well. Martin told Pincay to stay with Secretariat. Wrong race to try that.:)
