Derby Trial

Back in the 50's, Churchill Downs would run a one mile race for 3 year olds called the Derby Trial. It was run the last weekend in April, just a week before the Derby. And I can remember, every year in the wrap-up show after the Derby was run, the announcers would state that no horse had ever won the Derby Trial and the Derby. So what happened? Trainers started skipping the Trial and now there is no Derby Trial. Granted, 11 TC winners out of 28 with a chance coming to the Belmont isn't as overwhelming as never, but sometimes you *can* learn from things that happened years ago.

Anyway, I find it interesting that 50 years ago, the top trainers in the sport didn't realize that they were burning out their horses a week before their biggest race.
