Doesn't winning 4 races on the 2-1 horses return 12 units, not 8?

I should have used the word "win" instead of "collect". You win 8 units, but you collect 12. You can do the calculation either way. I generally do my calculations with win/loss, so that the breakeven is zero. You could do also do it in terms of payback, where the breakeven is 100%.

This doesn't change the outcome of your argument (at least, I don't think), since the same is true during the "proportional betting" too.
