What makes you pull the trigger on a bet?

At one of last year's Stardust Handicapping Contest football broadcasts, host John Kelly asked Russ Culver and his opponent that week a question which I found fascinating.
"What makes you pull the trigger on a bet?"
You like two games. What makes you select one and not the other? How do you narrow the field to your final choices?I've thought about this periodically since, but haven't come up with many answers. Last week I'd circled MANY NFL plays, with question marks next to the team I was favoring, notes on a projected total, etc. Yet I made few plays.
It was one week where I wish I'd played all, as I'd have been way ahead on the non-played picks. Yet for various reasons, I'd come up with enough "contras" on these to ultimately pass.I'm wondering if any of you can shed light on your own process of ultimately narrowing down the board to the plays you finally make.
