I do my own stats

In Response To: statistical analysis software (Snow)

I use a commercially available database/stats package to crunch the numbers for me, but I design the analyses myself. It's a great way to learn a lot about the sport, even if the ultimate product is not hugely successful.

Search hard enough on the Internet and you'll find lots of people who do similar things. In fact, last year I found 2-3 guys whose analyses lead to very similar predictions, so I no longer believe my football algorithms are unique. I guess that's not really a surprise -- there are a limited number of ways to do this. Still, it took the wind out of my sails for a while. When I expressed this concern to Stanford and others, they have encouraged me to continue posting picks, even if they are highly correlated with those made by others.

FWIW, I think my baseball prediction model is fairly unique. Unfortunately, my long term record in baseball so far is not too encouraging.
