Action points betting: discussion.

In an action points bet a bettor makes or loses more depending on how much his team covers or fails to cover.

Example. Action points bet on the Jets +2, 1 unit per point, 10 point maximum.

Jets lose by 2. Bettor pushes.
Jets win by 8 or more. Bettor wins 10 units.
Jets win by 3. Bettor wins 5 units.
Jets lose by 6. Bettor loses 4x1.1=4.4 units.
Jets lose by 12 or more. Bettor loses 10x1.1= 11 units.

Who has action points? A few of the offshores. Since the standard 11-10 vig is in place, the only obvious disadvantage is the difficulty in bet sizing since you don't know if you might lose 1.1 up to 11 units. So why do it?

Many spreads have distribution of results around them that are anything but uniform. An extreme example would be the line on an OT game. Whereas you would almost never want the dog +2.5 in this situation, you would love to have the dog +2.5 in an NFL action point bet, since you would lose .55 units if they lose by a fg, and pick up 5.5 units with a fg win. In general, I will be playing action points heavily on games this year where the dog is around 1-2.5. These points are not very helpful in your cover chance, but they are HUGE in your action point betting. Also, to the line shopper, if the line is pkem around town, and you lean to team A, expect a close game, and you see team A at +1 somewhere you think.

1. Great value! Kind of......1 does not hit that often.
2. Tease em up to +7.5! But maybe that book does not have good teaser odds
3. Action points!! Your team wins by 7, you get 8. Your team loses by 7, you pay 6.6. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Basic Strategy (best action point hand): Action point any NFL home team, +2.5, in a 10 point action point bet.

I will ask TwoMinWarning to give us what the historical record has been.
