Max is back (the question is - does anyone care?)

First let me begin by saying that my picks are not based on any recognized system. I am a rank amateur. My picks are based on many years of playing various pools, betting (minimally) and watching lots of football. I believe that if you lay more than 3 in a pro game, you should have strong convictions as it is often difficult to pick outright winners (parity). Also, home field advantage ain’t what it used to be with exceptions such as the altitude in Denver. A lot of this is due to salaries, miked quarterbacks, corporate fans and impersonal stadiums. Well, anyway, that’s my opinion.
I had a superb year in 2000 and I hope I can repeat. I am going to try to post picks for all pro games each week including 3 strong games. The spread will be as in the USA Today on the Wednesday before with the exception of Thanksgiving week where I will use Tuesday’s. These are the rules of my pool that I finished tied for 1st out of 39 people in 2000.

My record for NFL 2000 (throwing out ties) was:

Strong picks posted to BJ21 websight: 26-18 59.1%

All picks posted to BJ21 websight: 120-89 57.4%

All pool picks: 141-95 59.7%

I will try to put some reason for my 3 strong picks and occasionally for other the picks.

Week 1 - September 9, 2001:

Strong

Big take points week as the teams get sorted out:

Chi (+10.5) v. BAL – Bal is another defensive team laying a lot of points. Chicago was competitive in 2000 and I like some of their offseason moves on defense.

Mia (+6.5) v. TEN – 2 defensive teams

Ind(-1) v. NYJ – I think Testeverde’s turnovers/age will hurt the Jets at key times staring with this game against a superior team.

All others

Oak (-3) v. KC

Car (+9.5) v. MIN

Det (+5.5) v. GB

CIN (pk) v. NE

BUF (+1) v. NO

Sea (-4.5) v. CLE

DAL (+9) v. TB

JAX (-3) v. Pit

PHI (+3) v. StL

SD (+2.5) v. Was

DEN (-7) v. NYG

Current tied for first with 34 other people (0-0).
